Congratulations to Marcus Sperling for his START Award

25.06.2023

The START program of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) was awarded to the group’s former postdoc Marcus Sperling for his project “Phases of Quantum Field Theories: Symmetries and Vacua”

Marcus Sperling will be returning to the University of Vienna and the ESI after working at the Tsinghua University in Beijing and the Shing-Tung Yau Center at the Southeast University in Nanjing (China) after being awarded the prestigious FWF Start Award, which supports exceptional young researchers by providing them with the chance to strategically plan their research projects over an extended period while ensuring substantial financial stability.

Marcus' research deals with quantum field theories (QFTs), a fundamental class of theories which, for example, provide the basic framework to describe interactions of elementary particles. In his research, he focuses on mathematical properties of QFTs with special features, called supersymmetric QFTs. During his project, he will be investigating various types of supersymmetric QFTs in different dimensions. An improved understanding of such models can help to better understand QFTs in general, which eventually can be applied to realistic models of physical phenomena.

We are delighted to welcome Marcus again to Vienna and can't wait to work closely with him!
