Francesca Pretto joins the group as PhD student

02.10.2025

Francesca has joined Marcus Sperling as a PhD student in the frame of the START project “Phases of Quantum Field Theories: Symmetries and Vacua”

Francesca Pretto completed both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Physics of Fundamental Interactions at the University of Padua, Italy. For her Master's thesis, supervised by Prof. Fabio Apruzzi, she explored generalized symmetries in quantum field theory and string theory, focusing on the role of symmetry via Symmetry Theory in theories with string duals.

Her now beginning PhD research at the Mathematical Physics group, under the supervision of Marcus Sperling, will investigate supersymmetric models, vacua, and generalized symmetries. In particular, they will employ recent techniques such as magnetic quivers and SymTFT to study quantum field theories in various dimensions. The project is part of the FWF START research project “Phases of Quantum Field Theories: Symmetries and Vacua.”
